“Excerpts from the History of Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church”

The Greater Mount Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church affectionately known as GMP humble roots began more than 40 years ago, January 23, 1972 at the New Christian Union Baptist Church (260 W. 66th Street in Chicago, IL). At that meeting seven charter members were present; Rev. Roosevelt Lewis, Julia Macintosh, Henry & Lee-Dora Dabney, Juanita Lewis, James Ola Tillis, and James Kimber. Those seven will always be remembered for their insight. Rev. Roosevelt Lewis was elected as GMP’s first pastor.

As Time moved on and God continued to bless, The Greater Mount Pleasant family moved into a new location at 8936 s. Cottage Grove on February 13, 1972. During the remainder of the year, 300 additional members were added and soon a new church was needed. At that time, members donated $200 towards a building fund drive and GMP’s United Faith Choir held a concert at Orchestra Hall to help purchase a Hammond Organ in sixty days. November of 1973 God allowed GMP to purchase their new and present location at 2100 E. 83rd Street…….

This is just a glimpse of what Faith in God can do…

God is not finished yet He still has great things in store for GMP….

Come Grow With Us!!!
